Top 4 Skincare Tips to Follow
Skincare is one of the top debatable topics. With so many different products out there, it can be challenging to find a routine that works for you. Before starting a skincare routine, you may have wondered: What products should I use? How many products should I use? Which products are right for my skin?Â
In order to determine the best skincare routine for you, it is important to learn the skincare basics. The following are four top skincare tips recommended by dermatologists.
1. Use the Right Cleanser
Facial cleansers are vital as they remove dirt, pollutants, dead skin cells, makeup, and excess oil from your pores. However, using the wrong type of cleanser for your skin type may cause irritation which could lead to excessive dryness or breakouts.Â
There are many different types of cleansers out there: cream, foaming, gel, and oil. By learning more about each of these cleansers, you will be able to determine which cleanser is suitable for your skin type.
Â
Cream Cleansers
Cream cleansers typically contain hydrating oils that cleanse the face without stripping the skin of moisture. These types of cleansers are usually very gentle and moisturizing, making them perfect for dry skin types. For those with oily skin types, cream cleansers are less suitable as they wonât be able to balance and remove the excessive oil as effectively as foaming cleansers.Â
Â
Foaming Cleansers
Foaming cleansers are great for balancing excess oil. They create a foamy lather which is great for removing excess oil, debris, and makeup. Foaming cleansers are a great option if you have oily or combination skin. Those with dry or sensitive skin types should avoid foaming cleansers as they may be too harsh and could cause further dryness and irritation.
Â
Gel Cleansers
Gel cleansers (like our Super Sensitive Cleanser) are lightweight in texture and effectively remove excess oil, dirt, pollutants, and impurities on the skinâs surface without stripping moisture. Gel cleansers are usually formulated to be gentle and hydrating making it suitable for all skin types â especially those with sensitive skin.Â
Â
Oil Cleansers
Oil cleansers are great for removing makeup and can be used on all skin types. This type of cleanser is particularly suitable for dry skin types because it removes impurities while nourishing the skin. For those with oily skin types, be sure to use oil cleansers that use non-comedogenic ingredients, so it wonât clog your pores and cause breakouts.
Â
Which Cleanser Is Best For You?
In order to figure out what kind of cleanser is best for you, it is important to know your skin type. You can determine your skin type by first cleansing your face, patting it dry, then waiting for about 30 minutes without applying any products.
After the waiting period, notice how your skin looks and feels.
Â
Does your skin look excessively shiny?
If yes, you likely have an oily skin type.
Â
Does your skin feel tight and look scaly or flaky?
If yes, you likely have a dry skin type.
Â
Does your skin feel balanced and comfortable?
If yes, you likely have a normal skin type.Â
Â
Does your skin look shiny in some areas (like the forehead, nose, and chin) but feel dry in others?
If yes, you likely have a combination skin type.
Â
Does your skin develop reactions such as rashes or redness when you introduce new products to your skincare routine?
If yes, you likely have sensitive skin. We recommend performing a patch test before you incorporate a new product into your skincare routine to ensure itâs suitable for your skin.Â
Â
Do you have frequent breakouts?
If yes, your skin type is acne-prone.
Â
2. Use the Right Moisturizer
Facial moisturizers are also formulated for different skin types. Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type is important to ensure that your skin receives the proper amount of hydration it needs.Â
One way to determine which moisturizer is suitable for your skin type is by looking at its texture.
Â
If you have combination or oily skin types:
Light-textured or water-based moisturizers are ideal. These include lightweight moisturizers and gel moisturizers.
Â
If you have normal to dry skin types:
Thicker, creamier, and oil-based moisturizers. This includes moisturizers that contain nourishing oils like shea butter, cocoa butter, or olive oil. If you have extremely dry skin, use cream moisturizers that have avocado or rosehip oil which deeply hydrate and nourish your skin.Â
Â
If you have acne-prone or sensitive skin types:
Avoid products with high amounts of fragrance. We formulated our Super Sensitive Moisturizer for sensitive skin types, but this gentle moisturizer is suitable for all skin types as well!
A moisturizer will start to show results in one to two weeks, so don't disregard a product if you don't notice a significant difference within a few days.
Â
3. Always Wear Sunscreen
The sun's UV rays can penetrate your skin beyond the outer layers and destroy skin cells. This can result in acne, sunburns, premature aging, uneven skin tone, and severe skin conditions such as actinic keratoses and skin cancer. It is important to always wear sunscreen, even during the winter and indoors as UV rays can penetrate through the window glass!
Â
There are 2 Types of Sunscreens: Physical & Chemical Sunscreen
Â
Physical
Physical sunscreens prevent UV radiation from penetrating the skin by reflecting it. The reflection is done by particles like zinc oxide and titanium oxide.
Â
Chemical
When chemical sunscreen is applied, it forms a thin film of chemical bonds that absorbs UV rays. It converts UV rays into heat and releases that heat from the skin, thereby preventing the UV rays from damaging the skin.
It is recommended to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of at least 30 for longer protection.
Â
4. Serum is Your Friend
Serums are a great addition to any skincare routine. They are typically lightweight and can penetrate your skin easily without causing a heavy feel. They contain active ingredients that can correct pigmentation, diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles, protect against skin damage, and soothe sensitive skin. Common actives used in serums include vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, retinol, bakuchiol (natural retinol alternative), vitamin E, peptides, plant stem cells, and many nourishing plant-derived oils.
Â
Choosing a Serum
When choosing a serum, look for one that targets your skinâs needs. Each serum is created with select ingredients to offer a particular benefit. From skin-brightening, anti-aging, hydrating, acne-fighting, and moisturizing serums, using the right serum can help you achieve your ultimate skin goals.
Â
Hyperpigmentation
For those who want to brighten uneven skin tone such as dark spots and hyperpigmentation, using a serum with vitamin C, like Vitamin C+ Brightening Serum helps to brighten and even out your complexion. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that brightens uneven skin tone by reducing excess melanin production that causes hyperpigmentation.Â
Â
Fine lines & Wrinkles
For those seeking to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, anti-aging serums with bakuchiol are ideal to refine your skinâs feel and texture. Bakuchiol Smoothing Serum is a natural and vegan alternative to retinol. Its soothing properties make this serum gentle enough for all skin types (sensitive skin types can finally get similar skin benefits as retinol minus the irritation!). Bakuchiol is a potent antioxidant that fights signs of aging, such as fine lines and loss of firmness by targeting harmful free radicals that lead to premature aging. It also promotes collagen production which increases the skinâs elasticity and firmness.
Â
Dry Skin
Those with dry skin types would highly benefit from Daily Dew Moisturizing Oil Elixir which contains rosehip oil, evening primrose oil, and grapeseed oil. These oils contain essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and soothing properties that deeply hydrate and nurture the skin by increasing moisture levels whilst minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Â
Hydrate, Firm, & Restore
Those looking to hydrate, firm, and restore a youthful glow would benefit from Marula Nourishing Serum. This serum contains marula oil which is high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and amino acids that effectively replenish and nourish tired, dull skin to restore a healthy, supple, and moisturized complexion.
